Low Shower Pressure: Find the Choke Point

20 minutes to diagnose

No single part fixes every weak shower; the sequence above tells you whether yours is a cartridge, a head, or a house problem.

The fix

  1. One fixture or the whole house? If every faucet is weak, this is a pressure regulator or supply problem, not a shower fix; that's a plumber conversation.
  2. Unscrew the showerhead and run the bare pipe a moment. Strong flow means the head was the clog: soak it in vinegar or replace it.
  3. Weak at the bare pipe too? Debris or a failing cartridge inside the valve chokes flow, and it often shows up after water main work sends grit through the lines.
  4. Pull and inspect the cartridge (see the hot-and-cold page for the steps). Flush the valve body with brief bursts of water into a cup before refitting.
  5. If pressure is weak only on hot, suspect the water heater side: sediment or a partly closed valve on top of the heater.

The matching FourHome part

Full disclosure: FourHome is our house brand. This site and FourHome have the same owner, so the Amazon links below are links to our own products. Part numbers and cross-references are published on each listing; identify an unknown part first at our stemsandcartridges.com index.
