Sink Stopper Stuck or Won't Hold Water: Pop-Up Fixes
20 to 40 minutes
FourHome makes pop-up drain assemblies, but this page only links parts from our verified catalog data, and the drain assemblies aren't in it yet. The repair above needs no special parts anyway.
The fix
- Clear under the sink and put a towel down. Everything happens behind the drain pipe.
- Stopper won't stay up or down? The pivot rod has slipped out of the clevis strap. Squeeze the spring clip, re-seat the rod in a clevis hole, and test.
- Stopper won't seal? Unscrew the pivot nut, pull the rod, lift the stopper out, and clean the hair and soap off the stopper and the drain. That gunk is most 'broken' pop-ups.
- Reassemble with the stopper's eye facing the pivot rod, snug the nut hand-tight plus a quarter turn, and check for drips with the sink full.
- Corroded rod or stripped nut? The hardware is cheap and mostly universal; bring the old parts to match.
Call a plumber instead when
Leaks from the drain body into the cabinet after reassembly, or a drain that stays slow after cleaning, which points further down the line.
